Galp Energia has initiated the deep conversion project for the Sines Refinery and has awarded to ENSUL MECI one of the main construction projects for converting and building new facilities at the Sines Refinery. This refinery is a conversion facility – one of the biggest in Europe in terms of distillation – 10.8 million tonnes per year (223 000 barrels/day) (source GALP Energia).
This 12 million euro project won by ENSUL MECI is part of a global investment of around a thousand million euros. The conversion and energy efficiency improvement project entails the construction of a new heavy fuel hydrocracker for producing diesel and jet fuel. The project will also entail the construction of a steam reformer unit for producing hydrogen and a sulphur recovery unit, both required for the functioning of the hydrocracker.
With this project, Galp Energia aims to tailor the refinery production profile to market demand, increasing its diesel production from 2011 onwards.
